Rusted brake discs lower braking performance?

Rusting of brake discs in automobiles is a very normal phenomenon, because the material of brake discs is HT250 standard gray cast iron, which can reach the grade of

- Tensile strength≥206Mpa

- Bending strength≥1000Mpa

- Disturbance ≥5.1mm

- Hardness of 187~241HBS

The brake disc is directly exposed to the air and the position is low, some water will splash onto the brake disc during driving and cause oxidation reaction leading to rust, but the oxidation is only a negligible little bit on the surface, the brake disc can remove the rust after stepping on the brake for a few feet normally. The pressure exerted by the distributor pump during the “rust removal” process is also great, and the rust will not affect the strength of the braking force in terms of feeling.

For the rust prevention treatment of non-braking surface, SANTA BRAKE has different types of treatment processes, the most common one is Geomet Coating, which is a new surface treatment technology developed by MCI in the U.S. to meet the government VOC regulations and the environmental requirements set by the automotive industry. As a new generation of Dacromet coating, it has been firstly recognized and accepted by the automobile manufacturing industry. It is a kind of inorganic coating with superfine zinc scales and aluminum scales wrapped in a special binder.

Advantages of Geomet coating:

(1) Barrier protection: The treated layers of overlapping zinc and aluminum scales provide an excellent barrier between the steel substrate and the corrosive media, preventing the corrosive media and depolarizing agents from reaching the substrate.

(2) Electrochemical effect: the zinc layer is corroded as a sacrificial anode to protect the steel substrate.

(3) Passivation: The metal oxide produced by passivation slows down the corrosion reaction of zinc and steel.

(4) Self-repair: When the coating is damaged, the zinc oxides and carbonates move towards the damaged area of the coating, actively repairing the coating and restoring the protective barrier.

Santa Brake can supply Geomet and other brake disc products with zinc plating, phosphating, painting and other surface treatments according to different customer needs.
