Everything you should know about brake pad friction coefficient

Normally, the friction coefficient of ordinary brake pads is about 0.3 to 0.4, while the friction coefficient of high-performance brake pads is about 0.4 to 0.5. With a higher friction coefficient, you can generate more braking force with less pedaling force, and achieve better braking effect. But if the friction coefficient is too high, it will stop suddenly without cushioning when you step on the brakes, which is also not a good state.

So the important thing is how long it takes to reach the ideal friction coefficient value of the brake pad itself after applying the brakes in the first place. For example, brake pads with poor performance are difficult to achieve braking effect even after stepping on the brakes, which is generally called poor initial braking performance. The second is that the brake pad performance is not affected by the temperature. This is also very important. Generally, in low temperature and ultra-high temperature friction coefficient will have the tendency to reduce. For example, the coefficient of friction decreases when the race car reaches super high temperature, which has adverse consequences. In other words, when choosing brake pads for racing, it is important to look at the performance at high temperatures and to be able to maintain a stable braking performance from the start to the end of the race. The third point is the ability to maintain stability in the event of speed changes.

The brake pad friction coefficient is too high or too low will affect the braking performance. For example, when the car is braking at high speed, the friction coefficient is too low and the brakes will not be sensitive; the friction coefficient is too high and the tires will cling, causing the vehicle to tail and skid. The above state will pose a serious threat to driving safety. According to national standards, the appropriate working temperature of brake friction pads for 100 ~ 350 ℃. Poor quality brake friction pads in the temperature reaches 250 ℃, its friction coefficient will drop sharply, when the brake will be completely out of order. According to SAE standard, brake friction pad manufacturers will choose FF level rating coefficient, that is, friction rating coefficient of 0.35-0.45.

In general, the technical specifications of ordinary brake pads are set at about 300°C to 350°C to start heat recession; while high performance brake pads are at about 400°C to 700°C. In addition, the heat recession rate of brake pads for racing cars is set as high as possible to maintain a certain coefficient of friction even if heat recession starts. Usually, the heat recession rate of ordinary brake pads is 40% to 50%; the heat recession rate of high-performance brake pads is 60% to 80%, which means that the friction coefficient of ordinary brake pads before heat recession can be maintained even after heat recession. Brake pad manufacturers have been working on the research and development of resin composition, its content, and other fibrous materials in order to improve the heat recession point and heat recession rate.

Santa Brake has invested a lot of money in the research and development of brake pad formulations over the years, and has now formed a complete formulation system of semi-metallic, ceramic, and low-metallic, which can adapt to the various needs of different customers and different terrains.
